“The path is the goal!”
Once the student completes the Combat Basics course in which they’ve perfected the fundamental Jiu-Jitsu techniques for a street fight; they are ready to attend our Mastery Jiu-Jitsu program.
One of the main reasons that makes Jiu-Jitsu such a dominant martial art is that it can be practiced against a resistant opponent. This, in contrast with other martial arts that don’t have a sportive aspect, gives a Jiu-Jitsu student an assurance that the techniques will reliably work in a real life altercation.
In our Mastery Jiu-Jitsu program, our students learn to play Jiu-Jitsu as a sport. Not only do they learn to use techniques against a fully resistant opponent, but their partner also knows Jiu-Jitsu, which makes the game even more intricate, challenging and fun! At this point they get exposed to advanced Jiu-Jitsu moves such as various forms of takedowns, leg locks, collar chokes and more.
Practicing the sport of Jiu-Jitsu is when the students:
- Sharpen their timing and reflexes.
- Increase their fitness and stamina.
- Learn to remain calm under pressure and trust their techniques.
- Learn to connect and combine different moves.
- Learn to be efficient with their movements, to breathe better and avoid exhaustion.
- Improve a resilient mindset that accepts tapping out and keeps going.
- Develop a tough, problem solving mind which will transfer to other areas of their lives, and much more!
Although sport Jiu-Jitsu removes strikes for safety during training, in our course, once a week we simulate striking with gloves in our sparring. This allows us to test the legitimacy of the techniques in a more realistic self-defense scenario.
While sparring increases the intensity of training, in every class we emphasize to our students the mindset of safety, cooperation, adapting to your partner’s skills and to keep the roll fun! This is key to keep our community at Mastery Jiu-Jitsu a welcoming and enjoyable environment.
At this level, students who embrace Jiu-Jitsu as their lifestyle will find out that the same principles used to succeed on the mats are the ones needed to succeed against any challenge. Therefore, the path to mastery Jiu-Jitsu will become the journey of self-mastery and mastery of life itself.
