Learning Jiu-Jitsu online can be difficult…

Too many courses for advanced competitors

  • The majority of the Jiu-Jitsu online content is designed for experienced athletes who are trying to learn the latest move to use in a competition setting.
  • If you haven’t learned the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu it’ll be very difficult to start your journey watching these kinds of instructional videos.

Isolated courses with no connection from one to the other

  • Other online courses available are not connected with each other, they are isolated systems and subsystems that will be incoherent to a student.
  • For example, there might be a 15-hour course about Half-guard sweeps with Gi, then a separate 15-hour course for Mount escapes No-Gi, another for Attacking the turtle with Gi, Lapel Guard, Deep Half Guard, Kimura System, Berimbolos, Leg Locks; and the list goes on and on. It’s never ending! Where would you even start?

Poor instruction

  • Winning major tournaments doesn’t necessarily mean the athlete will be able to break down and explain a technique clearly. There are world champions who are good teachers, but unfortunately, this is not always the case.
  • Many times, gifted competitors can make some techniques work due to their speed, strength or athleticism; and they have a hard time showing the step by step movements.
  • Furthermore, not only do they teach complex moves but some online instructors talk way too much to show a move than can be taught in half the time, they miss showing critical angles to the camera or they just show the move 1 or 2 times without explaining critical details.

Informational Overload

  • Finally, in a 15 hour instructional, it’s impossible to learn all the moves. The student can watch the entire course, but without an evaluation to make them practice and prove they’ve learned the material, most of the techniques they watched will be quickly forgotten.

Learning with Jiu-Jitsu online is easier!

We know how confusing it can be trying to learn Jiu-Jitsu online because we have been there too!
Here’s our solution:

A pathway to follow

  • Instead of learning specialized moves for competition in an isolated manner, we have created a starting point and the subsequent courses that will build your Jiu-Jitsu knowledge on top of what you already know.

In essence, we have created a pathway that will guide your Jiu-Jitsu journey.

  • Our first course is called Combat Basics where we will accomplish 2 goals: first is to teach you how to use Jiu-Jitsu to defend yourself in a street altercation (it’s crazy to see how the self-defense aspect is neglected in online courses!), and second is to introduce you to the most fundamental strategies, positions, submissions and escapes in Jiu-Jitsu.
  • After completing Combat Basics you will start learning how to play the game of Jiu-Jitsu. The next course is “Sport Basics Gi: Attacks”, and after that you will learn how to defend those attacks in the “Sport Basics Gi: Defenses” course.

And the path will continue from there towards our Basics, No-Gi techniques. Then we’ll go into Intermediate level and finally Advanced level, Gi and No-Gi, Combat and Sport techniques.

As you can see, we have created a structured way to learn this beautiful art that will make the learning experience much easier and fun!

Incremental learning

  • It’s confusing and challenging to watch an advanced course without having an understanding of the basic positions first.
  • On Mastery Jiu-Jitsu online, we’ll teach you the fundamentals first and then we’ll take you to the intermediate techniques, until finally you are ready for the most advanced techniques.
  • Each course will be built upon the knowledge you acquired in the previous course. Your growth will be gradual and supported by a solid structure that will allow for a smooth and easy development.
  • Instead of learning advanced, stand-alone systems and trying to figure out how to make it work for you, we’ll make sure to connect all the systems for you from the beginning. By the time we get to advanced techniques you’ll have no problem understanding what we’re talking about.

Straight to the point instruction

  • It’s crazy to watch how long some instructors take to introduce a technique before actually showing what they’re talking about.
  • Not only that, but some instructors consider it important to share with you what they ate for breakfast, how tired they are and what are their plans for the weekend.
  • I know how valuable your time is and the reason why you are paying; to learn Jiu-Jitsu!
  • That’s why as soon as the camera starts rolling you’ll see me doing a quick 30 seconds intro (or less) and moving right into the explanation of the technique, straight to the point and without wasting your time.

Many repetitions and different angles

  • Some instructors talk forever to finally show a technique a couple of times. And even the demonstration is cut by the explanation, so you don’t really get to see the move in real time.
  • On Mastery Jiu-Jitsu Online, I make sure to show you many repetitions of the technique, and in every repetition I’ll be introducing a new critical detail of the move. I called this the “layers teaching methodology”.
Different angles of the O Soto Gari technique, taken from the course Sport Basics Gi: Attacks.
  • Furthermore, many instructors teach at their Academies in a setting where the students move around them, depending on where the instructor wants their attention. Sometimes, in front of a camera, they keep the same position because they are not used to switching the angles for the students.
  • On Mastery Jiu-Jitsu Online, I make sure to always switch angles for the camera, so the students don’t miss any of the essential elements of a technique.

Step by step breakdown

  • I was never a natural athlete and because of that it was always difficult for me to spar against bigger and faster partners. Their strength was too much to handle.
  • To compensate for my lack of force and speed, I needed to break down each move to its core and execute them using perfect timing. Once I was able to rely my game on refined techniques I was able to stand a chance against the more muscular and agile training partners. Jiu-Jitsu is the art for a smaller person to defeat bigger opponents after all.
Breaking down the Hook Lift sweep technique, taken from the Combat Basics course.
  • In my courses, instead of teaching moves that rely too much on power and speed (to a certain extent all moves require an amount of strength), I teach moves that rely on natural and efficient body movements.
  • That’s why I teach every technique by breaking it down to its finest detail, so students can apply them without needing excessive force or explosiveness.

Concepts

  • Not only will I be teaching you how to execute techniques step by step, but I’ll make sure to give you a general concept that will help you understand the main idea of each move.
  • An “upa” escape from the mount can have 20 details, but the main concept is simply to trap an arm and bridge your hips up towards the side of said trapped arm. After internalizing this concept, learning the details will be easier and you’ll be able to apply different variations of the same technique.
  • That’s the power of knowing concepts as well as techniques.

Testing

  • You can watch a 15 hour instructional on how to do the Reverse De la Riva Guard, but if you don’t put the theory to practice, most likely you’ll only remember 2 or 3 moves and forget the rest.
  • Our ultimate goal is for you to learn Jiu-Jitsu, not just to purchase a membership.
  • For this reason, we have incorporated the ability for you to submit a video test performing the moves you have learned with a partner.
  • This will motivate you to not only watch the moves but to practice them with your favorite partner, become proficient and to submit your videos executing the techniques.
  • Upon passing your test, we’ll send you a certificate of completion. Nothing is more rewarding than finishing what you started and if you took the time to watch and perfect the moves, you deserve it!

We can’t wait to see what you learn!

Instructor

  • My name is Marco Moreno. I discovered Jiu-Jitsu in 2001 and ever since I started training I experienced a positive transformation in my life, not only physically but also on the psychological level. From day 1, I realized that I was going to dedicate the rest of my life to practice this beautiful art.

I had the honor of learning from amazing instructors and to train with different members of the Gracie family.

In 2015 Grandmaster Relson Gracie decided it was time for me to get promoted and awarded me the rank of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt.

I completed the Instructor Certification Program in July 2011. This certification is given by the Gracie University organization led by Professors Ryron and Rener Gracie.

I officially opened Mastery Jiu-Jitsu Academy in February of 2012 in Leesburg, VA. Through the years I’ve taught Jiu-Jitsu to thousands of people, kids and adults and with time I developed my skills as an instructor and learned how to adapt my teaching according to each particular student.

  • Mastery Jiu-Jitsu Academy has been selected Best Martial Art school in Loudoun County for 4 years in a row since 2020 by the readers of Loudoun Times Mirror.
  • The impact of Jiu-Jitsu has been so profound for me that I decided to dedicate my life to spreading the benefits I experienced with the people of my community.
  • Now with Mastery Jiu-Jitsu Online my mission is to make a positive impact with people all over the world!

Requirements and equipment

  • The minimum age to start our Bully Shield Kids course is 5 and for the Combat Basics course the minimum age is 13.
  • There is not a maximum age limit. There are many students training in their 50’s and 60’s.
  • Being in shape and having decent mobility will help. However, there are countless cases of students who started their journey out of shape and training Jiu-Jitsu helped them achieve a decent level of fitness. Bottom line is, don’t wait to get in shape to start, use Jiu-Jitsu as a workout to get in shape.
  • A Gi or Kimono is required to wear for Gi techniques. For No-Gi, simply wear comfortable workout attire.
  • Floor mats to prevent injuries when practicing takedowns and ground techniques.
  • Find a dedicated partner to practice the moves and you are good to go!
Study the techniques at home, get a partner, perfect the moves and upload your test!

Who is Jiu-Jitsu Online for?

  • Mastery Jiu-Jitsu Online is for students who do not have access to a Jiu-Jitsu school in their area.
  • Students who are not safe joining a regular Jiu-Jitsu academy in person due to a high risk of injury.
  • It’s also for students who are already enrolled in a Jiu-Jitsu school but feel like they need the structure of having an organized curriculum.
  • Students who train in a Jiu-Jitsu school who focus solely on the sport aspect will benefit from learning our self-defense courses to protect themselves in a street altercation.
  • Law enforcement officers will benefit tremendously from Jiu-Jitsu. It’ll help them stay safe in the line of duty and protect the community in the most efficient way.
  • Instructors who need a reference to prepare their class can watch the material and teach it to their students.
